The Guest House

This poem was read aloud when I was on a course last year with Dr. Robert Holden by the poet Rumi.  To me it sums up dealing with all of lives emotions.  We all want to embrace the happiness, joy and love emotions and we all want to banish and deny the negative emotions of anger, fear, depression.  Yet all of these emotions create our reality and help us to grow and evolve into stronger people who can be at ease with true self even the bits we don't like the rest of the world to see.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
